About
Angel Falls in Venezuela is the world's highest uninterrupted waterfall, plunging 979 meters (807 meters of free fall) from the Auyan-tepui table mountain (tepui) in the Canaima National Park. The falls are so high that the water often atomizes into mist before reaching the base. The tepuis — ancient flat-topped mountains — inspired Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World.'
Angel Falls was unknown to the outside world until American aviator Jimmie Angel flew over them in 1933 — the falls are named after him. Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez renamed them 'Kerepakupai Merú' (their indigenous name) in 2009. Access requires a boat trip and jungle hike — no roads reach the falls.
