About

Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, published in "On the Origin of Species" in 1859, is the central unifying theory of biology. It explains how all the diversity of life on Earth arose from common ancestors through the process of variation, heredity, and natural selection. The core idea is elegant: organisms with traits better suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing those traits to offspring. Over millions of generations, this process produces new species, complex organs, and extraordinary adaptations. Evolution is one of the best-supported theories in all of science, confirmed by evidence from genetics, paleontology, comparative anatomy, biogeography, and direct observation of evolution in fast-reproducing organisms. The discovery of DNA provided the molecular mechanism Darwin lacked. Humans evolved in Africa, with our species (Homo sapiens) emerging approximately 300,000 years ago. We share a common ancestor with chimpanzees about 6 million years ago, with all other mammals about 180 million years ago, and with all life on Earth about 3.5 billion years ago.
