About
The Holocaust was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews by Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945 — two-thirds of European Jewry. Millions more — Roma, disabled people, homosexuals, political prisoners, and Soviet POWs — were also murdered in what became the most documented genocide in history.
The Holocaust was industrial in scale: 1.1 million people were killed at Auschwitz-Birkenau alone. It was enabled by ordinary bureaucracy, neighbors informing on neighbors, and the systematic dehumanization of the victims. Its legacy created the state of Israel, international human rights law, and the phrase "Never Again" — though genocides have continued.
