About
Impressionism emerged in France in the 1860s–80s, led by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, and Berthe Morisot. Rather than meticulously rendering forms, Impressionists captured the fleeting quality of light and color in outdoor scenes, using loose brushwork, pure colors, and visual mixing.
The name came from a hostile critic's review of Monet's 'Impression, Sunrise' (1872): 'Impressionism! How appropriate — crude wallpaper is more polished.' The Impressionists initially showed at independent exhibitions after being rejected by the Académie des Beaux-Arts. They are now among the world's most beloved and highest-priced artists — Monet's water lily series alone contains 250 paintings.
