About
The Iranian Revolution of 1979 overthrew Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's US-backed monarchy and established an Islamic Republic under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The revolution, unique in history, replaced a secular monarchy with a theocracy — transforming Iran from a US regional ally into an anti-American revolutionary state. The subsequent 444-day hostage crisis (52 US diplomats held) poisoned US-Iran relations for decades.
The revolution had massive geopolitical consequences — the Iran-Iraq War (1980–88, 1 million dead), Iran's support for Hezbollah and Hamas, the nuclear program and sanctions, and the Shia-Sunni regional proxy conflict. The 1979 revolution also inspired political Islam globally and defined Middle Eastern geopolitics for four decades.
