About
J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (1954–1955) is the foundational work of modern fantasy literature, depicting an epic quest to destroy the One Ring across the richly imagined world of Middle-earth. Tolkien, an Oxford professor of Old English, spent decades creating entire languages, histories, and mythologies for his world before writing the novels.
The books have sold over 150 million copies and have been translated into 62 languages. Peter Jackson's film trilogy (2001–2003) won 17 Academy Awards including Best Picture. Tolkien virtually invented the fantasy genre as it exists today — his influence can be seen in Dungeons & Dragons, World of Warcraft, and countless other works.
