Genghis Khan Empire Expansion

The Mongol expansion under Genghis Khan and his successors (1206–1279) was the fastest empire-building in history. Within 70 years, Mongol forces conquered China, Central Asia, Persia, the Caucasus, Russia, Poland, and Hungary. The speed was enabled by superior cavalry tactics, sophisticated intelligence networks, psychological warfare, and a meritocratic military that promoted talent regardless of background. Mongol armies used psychological terror strategically — cities that surrendered were spared; those that resisted were destroyed as warnings. The destruction of Samarkand, Merv, and Baghdad (where the Tigris reportedly ran black with ink from destroyed books) eliminated centuries of accumulated knowledge. The Pax Mongolica that followed enabled the Silk Road's greatest era of trade.
