About

Napoleon Bonaparte rose from modest Corsican origins to become Emperor of the French and master of Europe by 1812. His military genius — the use of artillery, rapid maneuver, corps system, and psychological intimidation — enabled victories against every major European power. He reformed French law (Napoleonic Code), education, and administration in ways that endure today. At his peak, Napoleon controlled territories from Spain to the borders of Russia. His 1812 Russian campaign — reaching Moscow but forced into a catastrophic winter retreat — ended his dominance. After defeat at Waterloo (1815), he was exiled to Saint Helena, where he died in 1821. The Napoleonic Wars killed an estimated 3.5–6 million people.
