About
Niagara Falls, on the border of the United States and Canada, consists of three waterfalls — Horseshoe Falls (the largest), American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls — through which approximately 3,160 tons of water flow every second. The falls formed approximately 12,000 years ago as glaciers retreated after the last Ice Age.
Niagara is one of the world's great tourist destinations, drawing 30 million visitors annually. The falls have inspired daredevils — dozens have gone over in barrels, kayaks, and other vessels (with mixed results). The hydroelectric power from Niagara lights much of northeastern North America. Erosion slowly moves the falls upstream at about 30 cm per year.
