About
The Olympic Games originated in ancient Olympia, Greece, in 776 BCE, held every four years for 1,169 years until Roman Emperor Theodosius I banned them in 393 CE as pagan. They were revived by Pierre de Coubertin in Athens in 1896. The modern Olympics have grown from 14 nations and 241 athletes to over 200 nations and 11,000 athletes.
The Olympics have been a stage for some of sport's greatest moments — Jesse Owens's four gold medals in Hitler's Berlin (1936), the 1980 US Olympic hockey 'Miracle on Ice,' Michael Johnson's golden shoes, Usain Bolt's 9.58-second 100m record. They have also been a stage for political drama — the 1972 Munich massacre, the Cold War boycotts, doping scandals.
