About
Opera was invented in Florence around 1600 by the Camerata, a group of musicians and intellectuals attempting to recreate ancient Greek drama. Claudio Monteverdi's L'Orfeo (1607) established the form. The 18th and 19th centuries produced opera's greatest works — Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, Verdi's Aida and Otello, Puccini's La Bohème and Tosca, Wagner's Ring Cycle.
Opera demands extraordinary vocal abilities — particularly the soprano's top notes (high C), which became a test of technical virtuosity. Pavarotti, Callas, Sutherland, and Domingo are among its legendary performers. The Met (Metropolitan Opera, New York) and La Scala (Milan) are opera's holy shrines. Wagner's Ring Cycle (16 hours over 4 nights) is the longest opera ever performed.
