Storytelling Oral Tradition

Oral tradition — the transmission of culture, history, mythology, and knowledge through spoken word, poetry, song, and performance — was the universal form of cultural preservation for the vast majority of human history. Before writing (invented approximately 5,000 years ago), oral tradition was how every human community stored law, history, medicine, navigation, and identity. The oral tradition persists in every culture, and many of humanity's most profound literary works originated in oral form. The Iliad and Odyssey (Homer, 8th century BCE) show clear signs of oral composition — formulaic epithets ('rosy-fingered Dawn,' 'swift-footed Achilles'), repeated scenes, and ring composition — the features that help oral poets memorize and vary their performances. The Mahabharata and Ramayana (India) are the world's longest poems, originally oral. The West African griot tradition preserves genealogies, histories, and political commentary through oral poetry and music. Aboriginal Australian Dreamtime stories encode geographical and navigational information about the Australian landscape in narrative form, with some stories accurately describing landscapes that have been underwater for 10,000 years.
