About
The Ottoman Empire (1299–1922) was one of the largest and longest-lasting empires in history, controlling southeastern Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa at its peak. Founded by Osman I in Anatolia, it reached its height under Suleiman the Magnificent (1520–1566), when it stretched from Hungary to the Persian Gulf and from Algeria to the Caucasus.
The Ottomans conquered Constantinople in 1453, ending the Byzantine Empire and making it their capital (Istanbul). They were a sophisticated administrative state with a meritocratic military (the Janissaries), tolerance for religious minorities (the millet system), and magnificent architecture (Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque). The empire's slow decline from the 17th century and its collapse after WWI restructured the entire Middle East.
