About
Quantum computers use the principles of quantum mechanics — superposition, entanglement, and interference — to process information in fundamentally different ways than classical computers. While a classical bit is either 0 or 1, a quantum bit (qubit) can be both simultaneously.
This gives quantum computers the ability to solve certain problems exponentially faster than any classical computer. Problems that would take a classical computer millions of years could theoretically be solved by a sufficiently powerful quantum computer in minutes.
Applications include drug discovery, materials science, cryptography, climate modeling, and artificial intelligence. In 2019, Google claimed "quantum supremacy" when its 53-qubit processor solved a problem in 200 seconds that would take the world's fastest supercomputer 10,000 years.
