About
Rock and roll emerged in the United States in the early 1950s, blending African American blues, rhythm and blues, country, and gospel. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, and Buddy Holly defined its first wave. The music's physicality, sexual energy, and rebellion made it simultaneously enormously popular with youth and deeply threatening to established order.
The Beatles' arrival in America in 1964 (the 'British Invasion') transformed rock into a global phenomenon. The 1960s–70s saw rock's golden age: Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin. Rock has spawned dozens of subgenres — punk, heavy metal, grunge, indie — and remains the foundation of much contemporary popular music.
