About
Auguste Rodin's The Thinker (1904) is the world's most reproduced sculpture — a seated male figure in deep contemplation, chin resting on hand. Originally conceived as part of The Gates of Hell (a massive portal inspired by Dante's Inferno), the figure represented Dante himself viewing the torments below. Rodin later enlarged and cast it separately.
Over 28 full-size bronze casts exist worldwide, plus hundreds of smaller versions. The Thinker has become a universal symbol of philosophy, contemplation, and intellectual effort — appearing in academic institutions, on book covers, in political cartoons, and as cultural shorthand for deep thought. The original clay model is in the Musée Rodin in Paris.
