About
The Saharan silver ant (Cataglyphis bombycina) is the most heat-tolerant land animal on Earth, and the fastest ant relative to body size. It forages exclusively during the 10-minute midday window when temperatures exceed 60°C — the period when its predators (lizards) have retreated to shade. At these temperatures, most other insects would die within seconds.
At top speed, these ants move at 855 body lengths per second — equivalent to a human running at 360 mph. Their silver coloring reflects both visible and infrared light, keeping them cooler. They navigate back to their nests using a 'path integration' system — counting steps and monitoring Sun angle — to take a direct line home across featureless sand.
