About
The Serengeti ecosystem (Tanzania and Kenya) is home to the world's largest land animal migration — 1.5 million wildebeest, 500,000 zebras, and 200,000 gazelles following rainfall and grass in a 800 km circular route through the ecosystem annually. The wildebeest must cross the Mara River (filled with Nile crocodiles up to 6m) twice yearly — producing some of wildlife photography's most dramatic images.
The Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is one of the only places on Earth where all five 'Big Five' (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros — originally the most dangerous to hunt on foot) can still be found in significant numbers. The Serengeti has the world's highest density of predators — lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs, jackals, and servals. Tanzania's 48,000 km² Serengeti National Park (UNESCO World Heritage, 1981) is the continent's oldest national park still in its original boundaries.

Fascinating Facts
- ◆The Great Migration produces 500,000 wildebeest calves in a 3-week period each February — flooding the ecosystem with prey so rapidly that predators cannot make a dent in the population
- ◆The Mara River crocodile crossing is so dangerous that 6,000+ wildebeest drown or are killed by crocodiles annually — yet the migration continues because following rainfall to fresh grass is evolutionarily hardwired
- ◆Serengeti means 'endless plain' in the Maasai language — the ecosystem is large enough that it has never been fully fenced, allowing the Great Migration to continue unimpeded by human infrastructure
