About
Homer's Odyssey (composed around 8th century BCE) is the Western world's second epic poem — the story of Odysseus's 10-year journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Encountering the Cyclops, the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, Circe's island, and the land of the dead, the Odyssey is simultaneously an adventure story, a meditation on home and identity, and a reflection on heroism and cunning.
The Odyssey introduced many concepts and characters that have remained central to Western culture — the loyal wife waiting for her wandering husband, the coming-of-age son, the disguised returning hero, and the idea of the journey as transformation. The word 'odyssey' has entered the English language meaning a long, eventful journey.
