About

Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are among the most dangerous and most ecologically important marine predators. Named for their striped juvenile markings, they can reach 5.5 meters and 900 kg. They are the second most dangerous sharks to humans after the great white — responsible for the majority of fatal shark attacks in Hawaii and the Pacific. Tiger sharks are notable for their virtually indiscriminate diet — they have been found with license plates, tires, drums, and intact seabirds in their stomachs. They play a crucial ecological role as apex predators regulating sea turtle populations, which in turn maintain seagrass beds. Studies have shown that their absence leads to cascading ecosystem collapse.
