Venice Canals

Venice, built on 118 small islands in a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea, is one of the world's most extraordinary urban achievements. Founded by Roman refugees fleeing Hun invasions in the 5th century, it grew into a maritime republic and trading empire that dominated Mediterranean trade for 1,000 years. Its 150 canals (instead of streets), 400 bridges, and 600 palaces make it unique in the world. Venice was the wealthiest city in Europe from the 10th to 16th centuries — a democracy (the Venetian Republic lasted 1,100 years), a trading empire controlling spice routes, and a cultural powerhouse (Titian, Tintoretto, Vivaldi, and Casanova were Venetians). The city is sinking approximately 2mm per year due to groundwater extraction and Adriatic sea level rise — it floods (acqua alta) with increasing frequency. UNESCO warns Venice could be uninhabitable within a century.
