About

Volcanoes are openings in Earth's crust through which molten rock (magma), ash, and gases erupt. Driven by the immense heat of Earth's interior, volcanoes have shaped our planet's surface, atmosphere, and climate since its formation 4.5 billion years ago. There are approximately 1,500 potentially active volcanoes worldwide, with about 50-70 erupting each year. The most famous include Vesuvius (which buried Pompeii in 79 CE), Krakatoa (1883 eruption heard 5,000 km away), Mount Pinatubo (1991), and the Hawaiian shield volcanoes. Volcanoes have catastrophic potential: the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815 was the largest in recorded history, causing the "Year Without a Summer" in 1816 — crop failures and famines that killed hundreds of thousands. The Yellowstone supervolcano, if it erupted, could deposit ash across much of North America. Despite their destructive power, volcanoes are also creative forces — they build islands, enrich soils, and created Earth's early atmosphere.
