About

African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus), also called painted dogs for their mottled coats, are Africa's most efficient large predators — their hunting success rate is 80% (compared to 30% for lions, 25% for cheetahs). They hunt in coordinated packs using stamina rather than speed, pursuing prey for kilometers until exhaustion. African wild dogs have one of the most cooperative societies in the animal kingdom. The pack cares collectively for pups — sick or injured pack members are fed by regurgitation, all adults participate in pup care, and sick individuals are supported by the group. Sneezing is used to vote on pack decisions — packs only move if enough members sneeze in agreement. With only 6,600 remaining, they are Africa's most endangered large carnivore.
