About
The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a Mexican salamander that retains its juvenile features throughout its entire life (neoteny) — external gills, fin-like dorsal crest, and larval form. It never undergoes metamorphosis into an adult land salamander. Native only to the lake complex of Xochimilco near Mexico City, it is critically endangered in the wild with fewer than 1,000 individuals.
Axolotls have extraordinary regenerative abilities — they can regrow entire limbs, organs (including parts of the brain and heart), and even restore spinal cord damage without scarring. Understanding their regeneration mechanism is a major focus of medical research into tissue repair and cancer treatment.
