About
Chameleons are famous for their color-changing ability, but the purpose is primarily communication and thermoregulation — not camouflage, as popularly believed. They change color by moving nanocrystals (iridophores) within their skin cells, which changes how light reflects off them. Excited or dominant males display brilliant colors; frightened or submissive animals turn darker.
Chameleons have independently swiveling eyes that can look in two completely different directions simultaneously — giving them nearly 360-degree vision. Their tongues can extend 1.5x their body length in under 1/100th of a second — one of the fastest movements in the animal kingdom. Each foot has two toes pointing forward and two back, perfectly adapted for gripping branches.
