About
Dolphins are highly intelligent marine mammals of the family Delphinidae, with over 40 species. They are among the few animals to demonstrate self-awareness (recognizing themselves in mirrors), use tools, and show cultural learning. Bottlenose dolphins have a brain-to-body ratio second only to humans, and their communication includes individually distinctive "signature whistles" — essentially names.
Dolphins live in complex social groups called pods, cooperate in hunting, care for injured group members, and have been observed playing for pure enjoyment. They can swim at 60 km/h and dive to 300 meters. Their echolocation system is so precise it can detect objects smaller than a fingernail at 100 meters.
