About
The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is one of the world's most recognized animals and a global symbol of wildlife conservation. Despite being a member of the bear family — and having a digestive system suited for meat — the panda evolved to eat bamboo almost exclusively, consuming 12–38 kg per day to meet its energy needs.
Pandas are solitary and famously difficult to breed in captivity. Wild populations of approximately 1,800 individuals exist only in fragmented mountain forests of central China. Thanks to intensive conservation efforts, the panda was downlisted from Endangered to Vulnerable in 2016 — a rare conservation success story.
