About
The giraffe is the tallest living terrestrial animal, with males reaching up to 5.5 meters. Its 1.8-meter neck contains the same number of vertebrae as a human neck — just seven, each greatly elongated. To pump blood up to its brain 2 meters above the heart, the giraffe has a heart that weighs 11 kg and generates twice the blood pressure of most mammals.
Giraffes sleep for only 1–2 hours per day and rarely lie down — getting up from the ground leaves them vulnerable to predators. They communicate through infrasound and can run at 56 km/h. Their tongue is 45–50 cm long and dark purple to protect against sunburn.
