About
Manta rays are the largest rays — giant mantas (Mobula birostris) can reach 9 meters wingspan and 3 tonnes. Despite their massive size, they feed exclusively on plankton, filtering seawater through modified gill plates. They are the only fish known to recognize themselves in mirrors, suggesting self-awareness.
Manta rays have the largest brain-to-body ratio of any fish and exhibit complex social behaviors — gathering in 'cleaning stations' where cleaner wrasses remove parasites, engaging in aerial leaps (breaching) for unknown reasons, and appearing to play. Female mantas give birth to a single pup after a 12-month pregnancy — one of the lowest reproductive rates of any marine animal. This makes them extremely vulnerable to fishing pressure.
