Naked Mole Rat

The naked mole rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is one of biology's most extraordinary animals. It lives in eusocial colonies (like bees or ants) with a single breeding queen — unique among mammals. It is remarkably resistant to cancer (no confirmed cancer cases in nature), highly resistant to pain (lacking the neurotransmitter Substance P), and lives for over 30 years — 10x longer than similar-sized rodents. Naked mole rats are effectively poikilothermic (cold-blooded) — they do not regulate body temperature internally and rely on their environment. They can survive 18 minutes in an oxygen-free atmosphere using fructose-based metabolism — the only mammal known to do this. Their biology is extensively studied for insights into cancer resistance, aging, and pain management.
