About

Primates — the order including humans, apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans, gibbons), Old World monkeys (baboons, macaques, colobus), New World monkeys (marmosets, spider monkeys, howler monkeys), and prosimians (lemurs, tarsiers) — are characterized by forward-facing eyes, grasping hands, and large brains relative to body size. Chimpanzees use tools (termite-fishing sticks, nut-cracking stones, sponges), engage in lethal intergroup conflict, have culture (different groups use different tools and behaviors), and display empathy, self-recognition, and theory of mind. Bonobos (chimpanzees' closest relative) resolve conflicts through sex rather than violence — the most peaceful great apes. 60% of primate species are threatened with extinction, primarily from habitat loss.

Fascinating Facts

  • Bonobos resolve all social conflicts through sexual contact — they have never been observed in lethal intergroup violence unlike chimpanzees
  • Howler monkeys are the loudest land animals — their calls carry 3 km through rainforest
  • 60% of primate species face extinction — primarily due to deforestation, bushmeat hunting, and the illegal pet trade
