About
Psychology — the scientific study of mind and behavior — began with Wilhelm Wundt's first psychology laboratory (1879, Leipzig). Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory (unconscious drives, repression, id/ego/superego) dominated clinical psychology for 50 years despite limited scientific evidence. Behaviorism (Watson, Skinner — behavior shaped entirely by environment and conditioning) replaced it in academic psychology.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT, developed by Aaron Beck in the 1960s) is the most evidence-based psychotherapy — changing thinking patterns to alter behavior and emotion. It is now the standard treatment for depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and phobias. The DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, now DSM-5-TR) classifies 300+ mental disorders — but its reliability and validity are debated (the same patient gets different diagnoses from different clinicians 50%+ of the time). Mental health stigma remains the greatest barrier to treatment worldwide.
