About
Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest terrestrial carnivores ever, reaching 12 meters long and 8–14 tonnes. It lived in what is now western North America 68–66 million years ago — just before the mass extinction event that wiped out non-avian dinosaurs. Its 60-cm teeth, powerful legs, and binocular vision made it an apex predator, though debate continues over whether it was primarily a hunter or scavenger.
T. rex had tiny arms — but they were enormously powerful, capable of lifting 200 kg. Recent research has revealed T. rex likely had feathers (at least when young), possibly had lips covering its teeth, could not run faster than 12–20 km/h, and may have had exceptional smell rivaling modern birds of prey. Modern birds are T. rex's closest living relatives.
