About

Viruses are sub-microscopic infectious agents that replicate only inside living cells. They are not considered fully alive — they have no metabolism, cannot reproduce independently, and consist only of genetic material (DNA or RNA) wrapped in protein. Yet they drive enormous evolutionary change, cause major pandemics, and constitute the most abundant biological entities on Earth (10^31 estimated viruses). Viruses have caused the greatest pandemics: Spanish Flu (1918, 50 million dead), HIV/AIDS (40 million dead), COVID-19 (7+ million dead). They also shape evolution — 8% of the human genome consists of ancient viral DNA (endogenous retroviruses) that has been integrated and repurposed. Bacteriophages (viruses that attack bacteria) are being developed as alternatives to antibiotics.

  1. 18% of the human genome is ancient viral DNA — we are partly made of viruses that infected our ancestors
  2. 2Bacteriophages (viruses that attack bacteria) could be the key to defeating antibiotic-resistant superbugs
  3. 3There are an estimated 10^31 viruses on Earth — more than all stars in the observable universe
