About
The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the world's largest fish, reaching up to 12–18 meters and 20 tonnes. Despite its immense size, it feeds exclusively on plankton, fish eggs, and small fish by filter feeding — swimming with its enormous mouth (up to 1.5 meters wide) open, filtering thousands of liters of water per hour.
Whale sharks are docile creatures that often allow divers to swim alongside them. Their skin is up to 15 cm thick — the thickest of any animal — and covered in dermal denticles that reduce drag and turbulence. They can live for up to 150 years, making them among the longest-lived vertebrates.
