About

Charles Darwin (1809–1882) spent 20 years after his Galápagos voyage working up the courage to publish 'On the Origin of Species' (1859), which presented natural selection as the mechanism of evolution. He knew the idea would be deeply controversial, contradicting religious accounts of creation. He was right — but also right about the science. Darwin's achievement was synthesizing vast observations (from the Beagle voyage, pigeon breeding, barnacle taxonomy) into a single, powerful explanatory framework. His work on sexual selection, emotion in animals, and earthworms are also remarkable contributions. He suffered from a mysterious chronic illness throughout his adult life that may have been anxiety, Chagas disease, or other causes.
