About

Cleopatra VII Philopator (69-30 BCE) was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Far from the seductress of popular mythology, she was an extraordinarily gifted ruler: fluent in nine languages, skilled in mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy. Cleopatra was the first Ptolemaic ruler to learn Egyptian (her predecessors spoke only Greek for 300 years). She allied with Julius Caesar, with whom she had a son (Caesarion), and later with Mark Antony, with whom she had three more children. After the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra's forces by Octavian (later Augustus Caesar) at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE, both Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide. Cleopatra's death marked the end of the Hellenistic period and the beginning of the Roman Empire's dominance. Her cultural impact endures through Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra," Elizabeth Taylor's iconic portrayal in the 1963 film, and ongoing scholarly fascination.
