About
Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer who played a central role in the Scientific Revolution. His improvements to the telescope and subsequent astronomical observations confirmed the Copernican heliocentric model — that Earth orbits the Sun — leading to his infamous trial by the Inquisition.
He discovered Jupiter's four largest moons, observed sunspots, and described the phases of Venus. His work on motion and falling bodies laid the groundwork for Newton's laws. The Catholic Church forced him to recant his heliocentric views and placed him under house arrest for the last nine years of his life.
