About
Gaius Julius Caesar (100–44 BCE) was a Roman general, statesman, and author who played a critical role in transforming the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. His military campaigns extended Roman rule across Gaul (modern France), Britain, and beyond. His Commentarii de Bello Gallico remains a Latin classic.
Caesar crossed the Rubicon in 49 BCE — triggering civil war — defeated his rival Pompey, and became dictator perpetuo. His assassination on the Ides of March (March 15, 44 BCE) by senators led by Brutus and Cassius plunged Rome into further civil war, eventually leading to his adopted heir Octavian becoming Augustus, the first Emperor.
