About
Karl Marx (1818–1883) was a German philosopher, economist, and revolutionary socialist whose works — The Communist Manifesto (1848, with Engels) and Das Kapital (1867) — became the theoretical foundation for communist and socialist movements worldwide. His analysis of capitalism, class struggle, and alienation of labor remains influential in economics, sociology, and political theory.
Marx spent much of his life in poverty in London, supported by Friedrich Engels. He died before seeing his ideas applied by Lenin in Russia. Communist governments inspired by his work governed a third of the world's population by the mid-20th century. Whether his ideas were betrayed or implemented faithfully by Stalin, Mao, and others remains debated.
