About
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869–1948) led India's independence movement against British colonial rule using nonviolent civil disobedience — a strategy that inspired civil rights movements worldwide. His campaigns of noncooperation, boycotts, and peaceful marches forced the British Empire to negotiate, culminating in Indian independence in 1947.
Gandhi's philosophy of ahimsa (nonviolence) and satyagraha (truth-force) influenced Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and countless other leaders. He lived an ascetic life, wearing homespun cloth and fasting as political protest. He was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu nationalist, just months after independence.
