About

Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African anti-apartheid activist, revolutionary, and political leader who served as the first Black president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. His 27-year imprisonment under the apartheid regime and his subsequent commitment to reconciliation rather than revenge made him one of history's greatest moral exemplars. Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 and helped found its militant wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe. Arrested in 1964, he was convicted of sabotage and conspiracy and sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben Island. After his release in 1990 — amidst global pressure and internal unrest — Mandela negotiated the end of apartheid with President F.W. de Klerk. Both men received the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. South Africa's first multiracial elections in 1994 elected Mandela as president. His presidency focused on dismantling apartheid's legacy, promoting racial reconciliation through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and addressing poverty. His moral authority and personal dignity transcended politics to make him a universal symbol of human dignity.
