About

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist who made extraordinary contributions to the development of alternating current (AC) electricity supply systems. His work forms the foundation of our modern electrical grid. Tesla's rivalry with Thomas Edison — the AC/DC "War of Currents" — is one of history's great scientific conflicts. Edison championed direct current (DC); Tesla, working with George Westinghouse, proved AC was superior for long-distance transmission. The modern world runs on Tesla's AC system. Tesla also invented the Tesla coil, contributed to radio technology, developed early X-ray apparatus, and conceptualized wireless power transmission decades before WiFi. He held over 300 patents. Despite his genius, Tesla died virtually penniless in a New York hotel room. His legacy was long overshadowed by Edison but has been massively rehabilitated — Elon Musk named his electric car company after him.
